Picking the right keywords is perhaps the most important step when naming and optimizing your site. Or at least that is what I read on numerous sites and heard on many podcasts about internet marketing. Volumes could be written on the subject but let me tell you exactly what process I followed when picking the right keywords.
Google’s Keyword Tool
I knew that I was going to build a niche site built around internet marketing with the intent of generating revenue. I used Google’s Keyword Tool and entered “create wealth” to find relevant related long tail keywords (keywords with more than two words). By signing into my Google account, I was able to get about 800 relevant keywords. I would have to go through the list of 800 words to find keywords with at least 1000 searches per month and I would have to then take each one and search on it in Google to find keywords with less then 10,000 competing results. This would take days if I did not have software to accomplish this. However, there were resources available to me. The one that I used was the software from the Mass Money Makers system that I purchased. This software was worth the price of the system alone. I still use the software for other sites, but it is no longer available.
Automation Software
Using the Mass Money Maker software, I found keywords that met my criteria of more than 1000 searches per month with less than 10,000 competition. In fact, the very name of this website “Financial Highway” met this criteria so I bought the domain and put up this site. There is a lot more to search engine optimization (SEO) which I will go into in another series post. Part of optimizing a site for SEO is to build a list of keywords that meet the requirements listed above. I built this list using the software tool saving me a lot of time and frustration.
Better Automation Software
The Mass Money Maker software is limited in picking the right keywords. It was fine when I started but I needed to get more sophisticated. I did research and wanted to use what the big time bloggers were using to pick their keywords. After watching a webinar from Pat Flynn, I decided to purchase software called Market Samurai. This software is very robust. It gives you so much more than a keyword tool. I could write volumes on why this is a must for any blogger looking to monetize their site or get a lot of traffic.
